A tale of urban reality..

Falling Down
William Foster is your average citizen, having to deal with the average grinds of an average day.  He has one desire:  go home to celebrate his daughter's birthday.  Unfortunately, everyone in the world seems to be keeping him from doing that very thing.  Foster decides to strike back at everyone in his path:  from lazy construction workers in the street to inconsiderate customer service workers in a fast food restaurant.  Meanwhile, Officer Prendergast of the LAPD is a day away from retiring from the force and just wants to go home.  These two meet, and the fate of two lives are changed forever.

"I'm the bad guy?  How did that happen?"

William Foster (Michael Douglas)

Michael Douglas is William Foster, a hard working citizen just trying to get home to his daughter's birthday party.  Robert Duvall is Officer Prendergast, a policeman just trying to get home from work on his last day on the force.  Throughout the day, Foster exacts his own 'philosophy' on the general public, everyone from panhandlers in the park to a couple of shopowners with mixed values.  Meanwhile, Officer Prendergast wants to retire from the LAPD without any incidents in the field and go home to his wife.  But Prendergast's gut instincts, and skills for following up leads get the better of him and he ends up crossing swords with Foster.

I loved this movie.  There is no Oscar material here, but "Falling Down" was enjoyable in the least.  Foster does in reality what most folks want to do in fantasy.  Who wouldn't want to teach some construction workers a lesson with a rocket launcher, or tell the manager at a restaurant how you're not completely satisfied with their product.  For a while you kind of cheer for Foster, until his past starts to catch up with him.  You then begin to discover who the real enemy here is.

If you're having a nothing-to-watch-on-TV day, then check out this movie.  Definitely worth the rental.
